EDWINSTOWE – A ROYAL BEGINNING…

Did you know that long before it was an outlaw’s haven, Edwinstowe was a sacred site.

The name itself literally translates to “Edwin’s resting place.” It honours King Edwin of Northumbria, a 7th-century monarch who was killed in a nearby battle in 633 AD.

Legend has it his body was secretly hidden in the forest to protect it from desecration by his enemies, and a small wooden chapel was later erected. The Church of St Mary’s was rebuilt in stone in 1175. By the time the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, it was just a tiny settlement with five households and a single priest.
