EDWINSTOWE’S BEST-KEPT SECRET…Did Robin Hood Actually Get Married Here?..

Opposite The Village Kitchen is the beautiful, medieval St Mary’s Church. According to local legend, this is the exact spot where Robin Hood married his beloved Maid Marian. While the stone church you see today dates back to the 12th century, stepping inside feels like stepping straight into a storybook.

Local tradition holds that part of its stone rebuilding in 1175 was penance imposed on King Henry II for the murder of Thomas Becket.

After soaking in the history of the church, take a short stroll to The Village Kitchen for a delicious meal or snack enjoyed with some of our award winning teas or coffee then stroll down Edwinstowe‘s bustling High Street. You can’t miss the striking bronze statue dedicated to the famous couple. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a quick photo before heading out into the wilderness.

No Robin Hood tour is complete without visiting his legendary headquarters. A short, scenic walk from the village centre leads you directly into Sherwood Forest to meet the Major Oak. This gargantuan tree is estimated to be between 800 and 1,000 years old. With a canopy spreading over 90 feet, it’s easy to see how a band of Merry Men could have easily hidden in its massive boughs.
